So today I haven't really done much. I have been more or less been trying to get my sketch books in more of an order, and up to date so I don't have to come back to it later on in the year. I have however started to make more of a progress with my Main Project. As my dissertation begins to loom nearer, I have realized I need more information to add to it. So please, it will take less than a minute to do and i would really appreciate it.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CFZ7G9T I hope to really get into designing my book cover tomorrow and begin to experiment with the layout and text. So I will be putting up my progress of them tomorrow, with more than likely a few screen shots.

So today I went over the brief for the Kelpies competition today and finally got some sketches done. They are incredibly rough as you can see, but they are definitely progressing. I have also been watching a few spy movies while doing this project. Just to get myself into that mode. I hope tomorrow I will be able to develop these sketches further. Will update tomorrow. Sorry today's blog has been short. But I am still in the development stages
I have spent most of today researching for this new book cover competition I am doing for Kelpies. The cover is for "Hunt At The Hill Of The Red Fox MI5" So this book cover will be for 10-12 year old audience, and it's all about spies! Really looking forward to getting stuck in. the Book is set in the Cold War, I have had to brush up a little on my history. But yea, I haven't yet done any sketches for this. As I am currently just processing all the information I have gathered. With the likes of the designs of other Kelpies Illustrators, the cold war history as I mentioned before. And what other book cover about spies have done. These I am assuming are the first book illustrations. So to my understanding (As the company haven't given too much information) I am designing the sequel to this book. So this in it's self gives me a little more insight into how to design this. As well as looking at these covers and taking notes on what I like and dislike about each of them. I will hopefully have actual sketches to show you tomorrow on my initial ideas on what the hell I'm doing.
So I've finished my pieces for the House Of Illustration competition. I'm happy with the end result, however. Looking back on the project, I feel I would have done it differently. Looking at them I feel I would have done them more painterly, and a little bit more grown up. Although with the stories I read I'll have to admit the audience was hard to put my finger on. With that project aside now, I now have till the 30th to do the Kelpies book cover. I am looking forward to it and i also feel that I have already learnt an awful lot from the H.O.I. competition. I also have to admit I am also really glad that I have roughly two weeks to complete the Keplies book cover.
I am also hoping to get started back to my main project, as I feel I have majorly been neglecting it. I also hate to say it, but my dissertation is due in the 6th of March. So I will have to get back into fixing that. And doing more work for that, although I think till the 30th I will be mainly focusing on the Kelpies project. But doing a wee bit of research and things for my main project on the side. Just to get the ball rolling. So yea, that's it for me today, hopefully will have sketches up tomorrow of what I plan on doing for the book cover for the Kelpies. So I have literally been working on my computer since I got up this morning. I have changed one of my designs and I am almost completely finished with the full set. Not going to lie I am beginning to lose the will a little. But nothing chocolate and a good nights sleep won't cure. So here are all four of my pieces so far, I am hoping to have them all completed by tomorrow. I am a little worried they all might be a little too dark, which is something I am definitely planning to work on and finish off tomorrow. I am still not completely sure if these look like a set. I feel as though I have been staring at them all too long to really think straight about them. They all however have the same textures, colours, and techniques within all of them. So They all definitely link within that category. I have decided not to use use any text within the images. If I am miraculously chosen as the the winner of this competition (fat chance) I would prefer House Of Illustration to chose their own font. So yeah, hopefully my next post will be how happy I am with my finals and not working into the night.
I also might be going out tomorrow night to take some star photos. Just hoping it's not too cold, and the weather will be good to us, but I am looking forward to it. I haven't done any photography in a while so it'll be nice :) Been so busy I didn't even notice I missed a day of Blog. Sorry! So I uploaded little glimpses of the images I am preparing to upload for a competition. I have finished 3 of 4 images, although I am still going back and forth and tweaking a lot of the images. the images I last uploaded are not totally different and have developed more. My only regret is really not kicking my ass earlier to get it all done. I have given my self a week, which is pathetic. I still know I can get it done and even so far I have learnt a lot. So here are my 3 images so far. they may again totally change before I upload them for the deadline which is Monday.
So, I have been doing a fair wee bit the past 4 days. I have now returned back to Uni for my final semester, then back home to face the big scary world. At the moment I have been mainly trying to catch up on uni work, which I have definitely been lacking in over the Christmas period. As well as getting settled back into my flat. So, for the house of illustration book competition. I have been working my ass off. I now have three of the four pieces that I am to submit started, one of them is done. I am quiet proud of it if I'm honest. However, the second piece I have been working on. I have kept running into difficulties. With the image looking a bit too cartoon like, more than I would like. I have just started on the third image, in hope that time away from the second piece I will be able to go back with a clearer mind and fix it. These are little snips from each of the three images. The first image on the left is the image I am having the most problems with. The middle image is, in my eyes finished. The third Image I have literally just started. These three images are also in order of the stories. The Treasure Of Abbot Thomas, The Upper Berth, and finally A Tale Of An Empty House.
I have also been looking around the ViewBug website and have noticed a "Challenge" tab. The challenge tab is more what I have been looking for within ViewBug. It is very much as literal as it sounds. Other photographers, giving challenges. I have decided to do the challenges than the competitions. As I feel this will improve my photography skills and I feel I will learn a lot faster. I am also meeting up with my tutor tomorrow, pretty certain I will be getting my ass handed to me. My first two weeks or so with being back at uni I know will be hectic. But I believe that I will be if not fully up to date I will at least be a hell of a lot more organized. Will let you know how tomorrow goes.... eek! So, I haven't done much today although, I have started to think I have been majorly neglecting my main project. I know I want to do portrait photoshoots as part of my project and I have been researching a little bit in how to do this. What sort of style and even post photography. Like what way I want to edit the images and how I want them to look. Below are a few examples I have been looking at There is a lot more I want to include, But instead I have a link to my Pinterest account with more imagery like this.
http://www.pinterest.com/ieatpurplehatts/ideas/ As a reminder, My main project is looking at the link between depression and consumerism. Hello, so. I realize I didn't post anything yesterday. With very good reason I did nothing, I also wasn't able to blog via, my phone. So anyways, today I didn't get as much done as I would have liked, due to illness. However I just did a little more research on the kings and queens that have ruled Britain. It started with King Offa (757-796 pictured below), The throne was then handed down to his son, Ecgfrith reigns for less than 6 months. The throne was then empty for 6 years before King Egbert ruled in 802. This seems to be the first and last time the throne is empty for this long. Another thing I noticed within the date of all the kings and queens, there really wasn't many that had ruled longer than 30 years. I also thought it was very interesting that the first Queen of Britain didn't happen till 1553, Queen Mary, she only ruled for 5 years and then the throne was ruled by Elizabeth 1st, One of the most famous rulers of Britain, she ruled for a hefty 45 years So I am now hoping to look into Kings and Queens from Europe and hopefully will start to get a better idea about which historical characters I want to have in my deck of cards. So I think I will more than likely have a few different designs of playing cards. But this will be the first hopefully.
I am now on my last few days with being home, So I am now making the rounds of making sure I see everyone before I leave to go back to Aberdeen. So I have to admit I am unsure if I will be able to post tomorrow, let alone do any more research. So don't say I didn't warn you! So, lots done today. Started really getting stuck into the ghost story brief. Been doodling all day as well as really familiarizing myself with the brief, as yesterday i got pretty confused by it. Here is just a wee image of my sketch book. Also looking into the deck of card brief I'm doing, I was researching royalty. Came across a random quiz. "See what King or Queen you are", So I took the quiz just to see what would come up. I had to answer all sorts of questions on what kind of leader you'd be. I'm not very into politics so most of the questions were random picks. I got: I asked my mum to see if she knew who she was, mainly due to my laziness of looking it up on Google. Her response was "She was really manly"..... So, yea. cheers mummy LOL. I feel like I'm learning!
