So today was horrendous, the weather was one word. shite. I really didn't think I was going to manage to get photos. So I opted for a slightly different option. I took photos within my parents small pond in their back garden. There is already frogs spawn in the pond, so i hoped to photograph some frogs too. As you can see the water was really murky and rather creepy looking. I also experimented a little bit with the flash on. It didn't really do much and I ended up preferring the images without the flash. I then decided to run the garden hose into the pond, in hope that it may make the water clearer to see through and even just healthier for the frogs. My parents also own two dogs, so the garden was filled with "land mines" So taking photos of the pond was a little bit like an obstacle course. This really worked! YAY!, I also saw I frog, however it was too quick for me to photograph, it's head bobbing above the water looking at me..... made me jump to be honest. Also algae got absolutely everywhere, so many images taken where the algae had stuck to my camera lens. As you can see the image of my boots has algae firmly stuck to the lens. I plan to take more images of the pond tomorrow, as I have spent the rest of today cleaning dead leaves, little toy boats and even pipes that have fallen in to the pond over the years. Really got my work cut out for me I think. I have also been thinking about my main project, however, because I am home this week I haven't been able to do the research I want. As I would like to see what is available at my university for students and then start to really develop an angle to what I will start to create, also not going to lie, the project has started to bore me a bit. So I really feel I need to find a way to make it more interesting to me I also got an email today about the Belfast Photo Festival. They want a range of images from the same body of work. The deadline is the 17th of March, which is just short of next week. I am also hoping tomorrow to go through all of my images and possibly even re-edit old photos. I am currently thinking of uploading the paint images I took roughly five years ago. I am still not too happy with how I have edited them since. So I am hoping to go back and re-visit them. If I had of known about the festival a little earlier I would have started a new body of work for it. As I have recently gotten a new shipment in of powder paints. So I am starting to plan what I want to do with them. This is my main image from the paint photoshoot. "Model Envy" there are other images from this series.
"The theme has been left open to remove any restrictions; submissions must be photographic or lens-based but can include incorporations of other art forms with the photographic medium (i.e. performance, painting, sculpture, music, literature etc). Individuals and collectives are welcome to apply; individuals should select and enter between two and six photographs from a particular series or body of work AND/OR submit their Photo-book for exhibition by uploading a single PDF (no image limit). (Note: You can submit both a photo-book and photographs of the same project, but a fee will need to be paid for both. If submitting only a Photo-book and not photographs, it will be your photo-book that will be selected for presentation and not photographic prints for exhibition) Collectives are also welcome to apply; as a collective, you can submit up to 10 photographs (a £15 submission fee will apply for every 10 images submitted)" This is just a little snippet from the rules and requirements of the festival. I have to admit I am not happy about having to pay the fee of £15, again I would have loved to have photographed something specially for this festival. Although there is always next year. Just excited that this is festival is coming from home. That's all from me today, here's hoping I will have something more interesting show tomorrow.

Just a quick post today. I finally went out with my camera and took a few images underwater! They aren't amazing, just images taken within rock pools: These are in preparation for a ViewBug underwater portrait challenge . I have to apologize because there are so few... my hand was sooooo cold I thought I was going to get frost bite :( frozen hand! aaaahhhhh! but yea, i am really surprised with the outcome of these and I actually cant wait to do more! I will be rook pool hunting for crabs and such now, it look like it....... this is definitely going to be a challenge and a half.
So, still feeling super ill today. But I just curled myself around my laptop and sketch books and made myself do work. I actually got a lot done today! So I have two new book covers that I started working on today. I am still not too sure on either, but I have now realized with the deadline looming. It is perhaps time to look at the ones I already have a choose one or two and develop it further. So here are the two newest editions of my book covers: So as I had discussed yesterday, I had tried to recreate the same style of image as the Star Wars posters. I did this to the image on the left, I don't really feel that this worked. I even added textures to make it look more like rocks and wilderness. The book is based on the Isle Of Skye, Scotland. So I looked up lots of photos in hope of seeing lots of forests and things to create a similar branch effect to create a type of inception image. But no, just lots of mountains and wild flowers : isle of skyeSo, as you can see just a lot of rough rocks and cliffs. Although I tried to recreate this landscape within my book cover I really don't think it worked. So I looked at all my previous book covers and thought, well what do I like about these? I then went back and created the image on the right. Of just a spy, It is definitely a lot simpler. than the image on the left.
I also started doing a little more of my designing of a deck of cards. I looked up royal families from around the globe. Looking at the costumes, uniforms, jewelry and of course crowns and tiara's. I came across this photos. The only thing that was said about them was these are photos from a party. I don't know what year, or place. but the costumes and amazing looking. Hello! So I'm not going to lie, I have done 0 work today. I haven't been well all day. So I haven't really left my bed. I have however just been thinking about what I want to do with my book cover and such, so hopefully I will be well enough tomorrow to do some work and show you how I've been getting on. The heat is on, as the deadline is this Friday. However I have always preferred to upload my finals for online competitions the day before, to avoid any technical difficulties that I may end up having. I think this is just a good tip for anyone really. So If suddenly your internet goes, or your computer, printer etc. isn't working you can go to a friend or families home and get it sorted. Or in my case, panic and run to uni to use their stuff. And as I don't have anything to show for today, here's an image from my research for my main project. I am starting to think of doing photoshoots and having facts on how to stay positive and the reality of the effect on how we consume. By Mirna Jose Photographer: Marcelo Cantu PhotographySo I have literally been working on my computer since I got up this morning. I have changed one of my designs and I am almost completely finished with the full set. Not going to lie I am beginning to lose the will a little. But nothing chocolate and a good nights sleep won't cure. So here are all four of my pieces so far, I am hoping to have them all completed by tomorrow. I am a little worried they all might be a little too dark, which is something I am definitely planning to work on and finish off tomorrow. I am still not completely sure if these look like a set. I feel as though I have been staring at them all too long to really think straight about them. They all however have the same textures, colours, and techniques within all of them. So They all definitely link within that category. I have decided not to use use any text within the images. If I am miraculously chosen as the the winner of this competition (fat chance) I would prefer House Of Illustration to chose their own font. So yeah, hopefully my next post will be how happy I am with my finals and not working into the night.
I also might be going out tomorrow night to take some star photos. Just hoping it's not too cold, and the weather will be good to us, but I am looking forward to it. I haven't done any photography in a while so it'll be nice :) So, I have been doing a fair wee bit the past 4 days. I have now returned back to Uni for my final semester, then back home to face the big scary world. At the moment I have been mainly trying to catch up on uni work, which I have definitely been lacking in over the Christmas period. As well as getting settled back into my flat. So, for the house of illustration book competition. I have been working my ass off. I now have three of the four pieces that I am to submit started, one of them is done. I am quiet proud of it if I'm honest. However, the second piece I have been working on. I have kept running into difficulties. With the image looking a bit too cartoon like, more than I would like. I have just started on the third image, in hope that time away from the second piece I will be able to go back with a clearer mind and fix it. These are little snips from each of the three images. The first image on the left is the image I am having the most problems with. The middle image is, in my eyes finished. The third Image I have literally just started. These three images are also in order of the stories. The Treasure Of Abbot Thomas, The Upper Berth, and finally A Tale Of An Empty House.
I have also been looking around the ViewBug website and have noticed a "Challenge" tab. The challenge tab is more what I have been looking for within ViewBug. It is very much as literal as it sounds. Other photographers, giving challenges. I have decided to do the challenges than the competitions. As I feel this will improve my photography skills and I feel I will learn a lot faster. I am also meeting up with my tutor tomorrow, pretty certain I will be getting my ass handed to me. My first two weeks or so with being back at uni I know will be hectic. But I believe that I will be if not fully up to date I will at least be a hell of a lot more organized. Will let you know how tomorrow goes.... eek! So, I haven't done much today although, I have started to think I have been majorly neglecting my main project. I know I want to do portrait photoshoots as part of my project and I have been researching a little bit in how to do this. What sort of style and even post photography. Like what way I want to edit the images and how I want them to look. Below are a few examples I have been looking at There is a lot more I want to include, But instead I have a link to my Pinterest account with more imagery like this.

Firstly Happy New Year! hope everyone had a good night last night, and your heads aren't pounding too badly today. This is my first blog on my new website. As you can probably already tell, the website it's self is still being set up and I am slowly but surely putting up my work as well as some new work. To explain my new name Craicin Designs. I wanted to be known as a "Norn Iron" artist. So Craicin, being Northern Irish slang for "cracking". It's more of a play on words. I am hoping this will be a new beginning for my art as well as myself. I am currently in my last year of university, Soon I will have to be an adult and get a big girl job. I have had a few problems with getting started and really trying to find myself in what I want to do within art. One of my problems have been, trying to learn too much and do too much. This being a problem as I haven't really been able to specialize in anything. So I have taken a big step and decided to keep things simple and keep to my photography and illustration. I am aware I have spoken about this before on my previous blog. So I am up for doing more photoshoots, working with new people within the industry and if anyone wants to work with me, on either. As a model, make-up artist, hair stylist, fellow designer. Or simply wants to give me a job. Awesome! I will be a very busy bee the next few days as I have 3 different deadlines for 6 different pieces of work. To be handed in before the end of the month. This includes 4 book cover competitions and 2 images for ViewBug competition. I shall leave you with one of my favorite images I took nearing the end of 2014. I know Christmas is over, but I don't care :) Again guys Happy New Year! |
